WAI introduce safety feature in EV charging cables

WAI EV Cable

Leading automotive parts supplier, WAI, has revealed it will be adding a new feature to its popular electric vehicle (EV) charging cable range for added safety and protection.

The latest evolution to WAI’s at-home charging cable will feature a thermal cut off switch inside the plug, which, once it gets to certain temperature, is switched off to avoid any electrical damage and risk of fire. Once the cable has cooled, it switches itself back on.

“The intensive use of any electrical equipment brings inherent safety risks, especially the use of EV charging cables at home. With so much current running through the cable, it will heat up, and if left plugged in, this can be dangerous,” said Richard Welland, president at WAI Europe.

“WAI cables will be the first in the market to have a thermal cut-off built in, so that if any high temperatures are reached, consumers can be confident in the extra layer of safety available.”

WAI’s EV charging cables range cover popular vehicle applications including Type 2 Female to Type 2 Male 32 Amp Single Phase and Three Phase, Type 2 Female to UK Plug (with controller) 16 Amp and 32 Amp and Type 2 Female to EU Plug (with controller) 16 Amp and 32 Amp for Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Tesla, Jaguar, KIA, Mini, Hyundai, Nissan Leaf 2008, Renault, Smart, Tesla, Toyota, Volvo, Porsche, Range Rover P400e and Lucid Air.

The range also includes Type 1 Female to Type 2 Male 32 Amp, Type 1 Female to UK Plug (with controller) 16 Amp and Type 1 Female to EU Plug (with controller) 16 Amp for Ford Focus Electric, Lia Soul EV, Citroen C-Zero, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Nissan Leaf 2012 – 2017, Toyota Prius, Renault Fluence and Peugeot iOn.

WAI’s EV cables are TUV Certified and available in a five-meter length and 10-meter extension length. The company’s extension EV charging cables are part of its commitment to provide a high-quality alternative to manufacturer supplied cables with the option to extend existing charging cable.

Other features of the cables include IP55 rated, long lasting, safe and reliable, 240VAC operating voltage, tested to 2,500 VDC, operating temperature range -30C to +50C and come with a handy portable bag for storage.
