Fans of some of the most rapid sportscars ever seen should find Masters of Motoring 2024 presented by Footman James of real interest, especially with the latest additions to the list of cars expected at the two-day event - perhaps the most notable of which is the famous March 707/717 CanAm monster race car from the 1970s.
Masters, which is being staged over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of June, with Saturday at Wiltshire’s Castle Combe Race Circuit and Sunday staged at nearby Bowood House & Gardens, continues to attract a diverse and increasing variety of cars, clubs, trade stands and event partners.
The March 707/717 – so called because it was built in 1970 but significantly modified for 1971, was built for Can Am – the unlimited sports car race series run across a mixture of Canadian and American race circuits was, at the time the fastest and most lucrative race series in the world (worth 2-3 times that of F1 at the time). This made it a prime target for the major race car constructors – everyone from McLaren, Lola, Ferrari, Shadow and even Ferrari and Porsche. March were ambitious, being active in everything from Formula One to Formula Ford, and their Can-Am car was built with a similar geometry to the Ferrari 612, but with significantly more power from its 8.8 litre engine, in order to take the fight to McLaren.
This particular car starred in the European CanAm equivalent, Interserie, winning races in its period and since then the March has had a spectacular second racing career in Historic motorsport, winning every race bar one in the 1995 season and having many other victories to its credit since.
The March 707/711 will join a number of other impressive racers, including around half a dozen American NASCAR monsters, amongst which will be this spectacular, original 2010 RCR Chevy Silverado truck, built by legendary Richard Childress Racing, and raced in 2010 in the Camping World Truck series by Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon
Masters of Motoring is also pleased to announce the expansion of club displays over both the June 1st track day and 2nd concours. The event will now include displays from Abarth Club Wiltshire & Avon, Lotus Drivers Club, TVR Club, Four Marks Supercar Club, Supercar Owners Society, Drivers Union Supercar Club and Focused UK Media Co.
Masters has also agreed a reciprocal deal with Bowood House & Gardens for this year’s event. Visitors to Masters will receive a 10% discount to Bowood House & Gardens set within 1000 acres of beautifully landscaped ‘Capability’ Brown Parkland surrounding the Georgian House. There is something for everyone including the children who will be thrilled with the adrenaline-fuelled Adventure Playground featuring a life-size pirate ship. The discount also applies to the Woodland Gardens – a separate attraction only open for six weeks showcasing an oasis of azaleas, magnolias and rhododendrons. Visitors to Bowood House & Gardens will also receive the same discount if they transfer over to Masters of Motoring from the beautiful stately home or its grounds.
