Numax – long lasting leisure batteries!

A boat owner with a vessel moored on the river Nene has contacted Ecobat Battery after two of its three Numax leisure batteries finally said ‘enough’ at the age of 14 and 15 years respectively!

Originally purchased on 15th July 2009 and 8th September 2010, the two Numax XV31MF dual purpose batteries, a brand which is owned by Ecobat Battery, have been fitted to a Viking 26 cruiser and for most of that time have been operating in parallel and used to start a 30hp Mariner outboard and power the vessel’s lights, water pumps and fridge etc. A third XV31MF was added to a back up system on 11th August 2015 and is still going strong!

“I’ve always tried to take care of the batteries since I was told by a specialist to think of them as a ‘living organism’ and so do your best to treat them accordingly,” said the owner. “With that in mind, I’ve tried to avoid putting them under too much excessive load and kept them connected to a couple of solar panels, although they were equally old and only 5W in their prime, but it must have helped!

“During lockdown I thought I ought to think about upgrading the solar panels, so in May 2020, when restrictions started to ease, I ordered and fitted a 20W panel for the two connected batteries and a 10W for the single, both with their own 10A charge controller, which made assessing the condition of the batteries really easy.

“Since then, and until August 2024, every time I’ve stepped aboard, the batteries have been, albeit without any load, around 13-volts, which has been great. However, on my last visit, although the 2015 battery was at this level, the two original batteries read 10.9-volts, so I realised that they’d finally reached the end of their lives and needed replacing.

“With a service life of around 15 years a piece, I certainly can’t complain that I haven’t had my money’s worth and naturally I’ve replaced them with another couple of Numax XV31MF batteries, which I’d obviously recommend to other owners of similar vessels!”

“It’s always great to receive this sort of positive feedback,” said Ecobat Battery’s, Andy Waite, “and it goes to prove that not only are Numax batteries a quality product, but also that, as we’ve always promoted, battery maintenance and care will maximise their service life, making them an even more attractive offer in terms of a return on their investment.

“The Numax leisure range consists of three types, MV, a standard battery available in three Ah capacities from 80 to 105, the XV, the dual purpose option that this owner uses, which comes in seven capacities from 80 to 225 Ah, and the XDC, a dual purpose, extra cyclic variant, for deep cycle applications, again in three capacities from 80 to 105Ah.

“Together, the range provides a highly robust solution for the majority of marine applications, but for extremely high demand requirements, or for narrow boats and live-aboard situations, we have a range of lithium batteries or two-volt traction cells that can deliver the extra load that’s required in any particular instance.”
