Government fuel finder scheme overdue

Fuel additive and engine cleaning specialist Fueltone Pro says measures by the Government to help drivers search for cheaper fuel prices are overdue, with solutions available within the aftermarket to help drivers save money at the pumps.

Drivers will soon be able to find cheaper fuel prices under Government plans designed to stop retailers overcharging them at filling stations, after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found drivers were being overcharged by as much as six pence per litre due to falling wholesale prices not being passed on.

Aberdeenshire-based fuel additive developer Fueltone Pro says that measures to help drivers save money are welcome. However, the Government initiative is too late, and more can be done to embrace technology and chemistry available in the automotive aftermarket.

Robbie Gray, chairman of Fueltone Pro, said: “Obviously we welcome any measures to reduce the burden on motorists, including the Government’s new initiative to help them search for cheaper petrol. However, these plans are too late, given the peak in petrol prices last year, and retailers should be held to account that cheaper wholesale prices are passed onto consumers.”

The CMA investigation into supermarket fuel stations1 found that the average annual supermarket margin on fuel had increased by six pence per litre between 2019 and 2022, equivalent to £900m in extra costs for drivers.

“Many solutions in the automotive aftermarket, following painstaking product research and development, already exist to help extend the longevity of their vehicles and improve fuel consumption, and consequently help drivers get more miles from a tank,” Gray said.

Fueltone Pro’s latest technological advances in additive chemistry can deliver up to a five percent increase in vehicles’ fuel efficiency, independent tests revealed.

A small petrol car with a tank size of 40 litres, achieving a typical 45 miles per gallon can gain an extra 20 miles of range, with a modest five percent improvement in its fuel consumption rate. Over the course of a year, depending on mileage made, this results in substantial savings of over a tank of fuel or more.

Additive formulations will keep an engine clean, meaning the engine burns the fuel for longer and at a higher temperature, resulting in an increase in power for every millilitre of fuel that the vehicle consumes. Fuel additives are developed to reduce emissions, improve fuel consumption, and clean up fuel system components.

The company’s petrol and diesel additive chemistry sits alongside Fueltone Pro’s range of engine flush treatments, diesel particulate filter cleaning agents, and diesel system primers.
