Kumho Tire has developed a tire digital twin (DT) system which is being applied by tire development engineers to the tire development process.

To proactively respond to the recent technology trends resulting from the growing demand for digital transformation in car makers and the strengthening of environmental regulations, Kumho’s tire digital twin system has been developed by incorporating big data analytics, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and Computer Aided Technologies (CAE) into the tire development process.

By applying the digital twin system, the tire development process has evolved from the physical tire development in the real world to virtual tire development in the digital space. The digital twin system will be used for tire development by design engineers for generating tire designs, conducting performance prediction, performing design optimisation, and simulating vehicle performance. This should result in shortened tire development time, improved tire performance and reduced tire development costs.

Kim Keewoon, head of Kumho’s Virtual Product Development Center, said, “Kumho Tire is applying new technologies such as CAE, artificial intelligence and digital transformation to the tire development process, with the DT system established for tire designers. The DT system will strengthen our technology competiveness and contributes to developing more advanced tires with better performance.”

In the near future, the digital twin system will be converted to a cloud system environment so that design engineers can use it at anytime and anywhere. Therefore, design engineers, regardless of their location, can globally use the same digital twin platform for tire development. In addition, the reliability and accuracy of tire performance prediction will be continuously improved by upgrading the performance prediction system. What’s more, the reliability and accuracy of vehicle driving simulation will be improved by introducing a vehicle driving simulator.
