Regular thermostat maintenance vital

A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to severe engine damage, resulting in costly repairs

Motaquip is urging independent workshops to emphasise the importance of regular thermostat maintenance to vehicle owners.

A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to severe engine damage, resulting in costly repairs that can significantly impact a customer’s vehicle and wallet.

To assist independent workshops in identifying thermostat issues before they escalate, Motaquip is keen highlight the following symptoms of a faulty thermostat:

  • High engine temperature: A thermostat stuck in the ‘closed’ position can cause the engine to overheat. This can disrupt the flow of coolant.

  • Decreased engine performance: A thermostat stuck in the ‘open’ position may prevent the engine from reaching its optimal operating temperature. This can lead to reduced efficiency and performance.

  • Noisy engine: Unusual sounds, such as knocking, clunking, or gurgling could indicate inadequate coolant circulation caused by a failing thermostat.

  • Coolant leaks: Visible coolant around the thermostat mounting face may signal an incorrectly fitted thermostat or related issues.

Rust and corrosion on a thermostat’s surface could point to other underlying problems, such as a faulty pressure cap, contaminated coolant, or the mixing of different coolant types. Independent workshops should be vigilant in checking these factors to ensure comprehensive vehicle care.
