Training provider transforms the learning experience for SEN motor students with AR headsets
Martec Training is revolutionising its motor vehicle courses through the integration of Assisted Reality (AR) headsets, significantly enhancing the learning experience for students with varying levels of Special Educational Needs (SEN).
A leader in the delivery of motor vehicle apprenticeships and courses, the West Midlands based training provider specialises in formulating structured learning plans for students with special education needs. One of the primary challenges faced by Martec is the varying degrees to which students with different abilities absorb and retain information.
To overcome this, Martec has recorded significant benefits after participating in a trial pioneered by Autotech Connect, The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), and RealWear which saw over 30 AR headsets distributed to colleges and training providers nationwide.
Since taking possession of three RealWear headsets in the New Year, Martec Training has reported a significantly enhanced learning experience for teachers and students alike.
The AR headsets have dramatically improved the students' ability to recall what they have learned by allowing them to record and playback sessions at their own pace, while the hands-free technology has enabled them to use both hands while applying theoretical knowledge practically, enhancing engagement and retention.
Martec has also witnessed significant benefits for staff as the headsets have streamlined the teaching process by providing an innovative learning aid, facilitating better retention of theory for students with mixed abilities.
The technology has also improved the overall learning environment, with the college recording an initial increase in attendance of close to 94% for theory sessions when the headsets were introduced.
"We have been delighted with the feedback from our teaching staff on how the headsets are being implemented by teachers and students alike to aid learning and support in the retention of information," said Simon Kitson, Operations Manager at Martec Training and a former vehicle technician who recognises the benefits of hands-free technology in teaching future technicians. “The use of the headsets was also noted during a recent Ofsted visit, particularly how it is a great aid for supporting students with learning difficulties, allowing them to record the session and access the information later to go over it at their own pace.”
“The introduction of AR headsets into training facilities has not only streamlined administrative tasks but provided substantial educational benefits,” comments Darren Dowling, Autotech Connect’s Client Services Director. “Each establishment involved in the trial has observed unique advantages. For Martec Training, the headsets have proven to be an invaluable tool in engaging students and supporting teachers, ensuring higher retention of information and a more interactive learning experience for all students, regardless of their ability.”
While highlighting the potential of immersive technology in special education, the successful integration of the headsets by Martec Training is set to lead to further headsets being utilised within the training provider’s hospitality and catering departments.
