Kumho Tyre urges drivers to prioritise winter tyre checks for added safety

The colder months bring freezing temperatures, prolonged wet weather and the risk of snow, which make tyre safety even more crucial. Ensuring vehicles are fitted with tyres which are capable of providing optimal traction, excellent wet handling and superior durability can be the difference between a safe journey and a hazardous one.

Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road, making them integral to road safety, particularly in unpredictable winter conditions. Kumho highlights that tyres with insufficient tread depth, improper inflation or damage can significantly compromise a vehicle's handling, braking and overall safety. Poorly-maintained tyres are particularly dangerous during the winter months when roads may be icy, wet or slushy.

To meet the demands of winter driving, Kumho advises drivers to consider fitting all-season or winter tyres. Its WinterCraft range, for example, is designed to perform well in snowy and icy conditions, offering superior grip and enhanced braking. Certified with the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, these tyres are built to handle severe snow conditions, making them ideal for areas with heavy snowfall.

Additionally, Kumho’s Solus HA32 is designed for all weather conditions, offering year-round performance and greater peace of mind for motorists. Its directional tread pattern improves water drainage and grip on slippery surfaces, while high-density sipes provide added traction in colder temperatures.

Maintaining correct tyre pressures is another key consideration during winter. Cold weather causes tyre pressure to drop, affecting performance and increasing the risk of tyre damage. Kumho advises drivers to regularly check tyre pressures, as maintaining the correct levels can help prevent rapid tread wear and poor handling.

Regular inspections are crucial to ensuring tyres remain in good condition during winter.  Kumho recommends motorists to consult a tyre specialist if they are in any doubt about the condition of their tyres, offering the reminder that tyres which fall below the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference should be replaced immediately. Worn tyres reduce traction, especially on wet or icy roads, and increase the risk of accidents.

Richard Lyons, Managing Director of Kumho Tyre (UK), commented: “As we head into winter, the tyre industry has a vital role to play in ensuring motorists have safe tyres. The changing weather conditions highlight the importance of tyre performance for road safety. While Kumho’s tyres are designed to meet these challenges, regular maintenance, correct tyre pressure and timely replacements are essential to ensure both safety and performance.”
