Registration remains open for GEM Motoring Assist’s forthcoming webinar, ‘What is safe driving and why should I care?’ hosted by Valerie Singleton OBE.

The event takes place on Tuesday 18 October at 2pm, and forms part of this year’s Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death) week of action.

The theme of Project EDWARD for 2022 is ‘Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour’, and the webinar will include presentations on understanding vehicle systems, eyesight issues and safe mobility for seniors.

Research shows that older drivers are more likely than their younger counterparts to adopt safe behaviours such as wearing a seatbelt and complying with speed limits.

Valerie Singleton has a long and successful relationship with GEM. As well as presenting the organisation’s ‘Still Safe to Drive’ web resource for senior drivers and their families, she remains a regular contributor to GEM’s quarterly membership magazine, Good Motoring.

As an experienced and responsible senior driver herself, Val has also completed two GEM driver assessments in recent years.

Val will be joined in the webinar by:

Professor Charles Musselwhite, professor of psychology at the University of Aberystwyth

Rob Heard, older driver expert and chair of the older Driver Forum

Margaret Filley, an enthusiastic driver aged 80 who is now facing the prospect of surrendering her licence because of deteriorating eyesight.

David Motton, road test editor of Good Motoring magazine

All welcome

GEM welcomes any senior drivers, their relatives and others with an interest in the subject to register and join the FREE event.

GEM chief executive Neil Worth said: “We are excited to be supporting this webinar for Project EDWARD, which is an initiative we have backed since its formation in 2016.

“Today two thirds of people aged 70 and over still hold a driving licence, compared with less than 40 per cent in the mid 1990s.

“We want to encourage senior drivers to stay mobile, while also ensuring they remain physically and mentally comfortable with the driving task.

“Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour is a theme we fully support – a clear reminder that road safety always starts and ends with our willingness to recognise and reduce risks.

“After all, we are all more vulnerable on the road than we think we are.

“I am sure this webinar will create the opportunity for some worthwhile debate.”
